Media Wall Units

Recently I have been working on a project, we are building a custom wall unit to accommodate an 80″ TV.  This is what has inspired this weeks posting.

I found several different types of wall/media units.  Its great how you can incorporate so many different materials into a simple idea as a wall unit.  These can easily be done in our Custom Built Homes or also one of your homes that we have not built.  As Sunlight does do renovations as well.  Depending on your design style and look you want to go for, we can absolutely help you accomplish any of them.

This is my favorite room/ media unit that I researched.  It looks like this space is located in a basement.  Even if you do not have a ton of space, knowing how to use the space given is extremely important.  Here it looks like they might have covered a structural column, something that couldn’t be removed so why not work with it in the design.  The sleek natural birch wood paneling compliments the rustic exposed ceiling.  Some shelving underneath the TV allows you to de clutter and organize books or game consoles.  The use of color is also very comfortable and inviting.

This custom media wall the designer paired natural stone along with natural wooden shelves and cabinetry.  The shelves being offset and almost floating help obtain a balance visually.  They also imitate the look of box beams simply by finishing the shelves with a smooth finish rather than textured and painting the same color as the wood finish.  Bringing the outside indoors can be very appealing and help you accomplish your rustic contemporary look.

For a very different look, this designer went with an all white achromatic color scheme.  Keeping the cabinetry at the bottom and shelving along the sides and top of the tv looks very organized.  Great storage space for the book lover, and appealing to the eye decoratively.  The coffered ceilings, trim and pot lights are great accents to this space.  To finalize the rug is pulling all the different colors from the books in the wall unit, wooden chairs at the table create a great ambiance.

This is a great room, the taupe/greyish tone of the wall unit is unique and modern.  A different take on your routine white or natural wood finish media units.  I like how they have kept the decorative pieces simple with white and black pieces.  The top of the media unit is decorated with an asymmetrical style as you work down it may not be exact but visually it balances out.
This media unit is very characteristic, from the crown molding and trim work to the painted backings of the shelves.  Every room needs a focal point and this room has captured that with this unit.  A great use of color in this space, the tangerine splashes, tan walls and textured blinds.  A touch of aqua blue bring a sense of freshness to this room.
Overall the concept of this blog posting was to go over different types of Wall units/ Media Centers.  As you can see there are tons of options and ideas when it comes to this.  If you are interested in building a custom wall unit in your current home please feel free to contact us and we would be happy to sit down with you and discuss options.  It is a great way to de clutter a room and create a main focal point.

Ensuite Inspirations

Renovations at our head office Design Centre are still in progress.  I was looking for inspiration for our show room en-suite, and came across these as our favorites.  We chose to go with a freestanding tub, Floor fixed Faucet.  Over the counter squared sinks, the rest will have to be a surprise.  We are excited to show you what we came up with, our custom cabinetry are in the midst of being built.  Flooring goes in within a week.
Out of all these photos I love the live edge wooden countertop, it is very unique and brings a sense of nature indoors which I admire.
Enjoy the photos and let us know which look is your favorite?

August- Outdoor Living

Outdoor Living Spaces

Wow, from the outdoor sectional to the bright red umbrella this outdoor living space really welcomes you.  I absolutely love the stone holding up the countertop instead of cabinetry.  This adds to the outdoorsy feel and durability of an out door living space.  There is plenty of seating areas, weather you want to have a dinner with a nice glass of wine at the counter top height table. The stools are high enough that you still have a great view of the TV.  Or if you would like to sit back, relax and watch the baseball game on the cozy couch. I think I speak for everyone when I say this Space is spectacular.

Anyone have an open concept family room that leads onto the back patio area like this one? I love the engineered hardwood flooring, the taupe tones compliment the textured walls very nicely.  I also admire the cohesive color combinations throughout flowing to the patio area.  Which can easily be changed with replacing all the teal and blue accessories with any color your prefer according to season. Both light fixtures really caught my attention from the exterior mounted fixture to the radial modern piece in the family space.  Having a pocket door adds versatility, open concept in warmer months and closed up during the winter months.

Working with smaller back yard living spaces? How interesting is this covered structure instead of buying the typical Gazebo from your local Hardware Store.  This design has so many little details that made it all come together beautifully. Especially the hand made and hand steamed black circle on the back side of the structure. That is an amazing design feature that truly stands out at night.  Check out that bamboo bench very rustic and original.

I hope everyone is enjoying their last months of Summer, soak up that outdoor living time!

July – Colour Palette

July Color Palette 2 - Copy_thumb[2]

July, Summer is finally here! This month I wanted to stick with kitchens as we tend to have a lot more guests over during the warmer months and entertain more.  The time spent in kitchens may increase.  Some of the color inspirations this month range from sea foam green to soft peaches and vibrant intense tangerine oranges.  Below I will show you that these colors can all be incorporated into kitchens without looking silly or tacky.

Sea Foam Green

This Kitchen shows the sea foam green color in the granite choice.  Its a beautiful fresh color for a granite counter top and looks extremely sharp with the dark wooden cabinets. The bar with the step down counter adds diversity to the kitchen and interest. The Arched Door with the Metal treatments compliments the lantern inspired lighting fixtures very well. Sea foam does not have to be done in a bold way with a bright paint color but can be softly done just like this.  I am a big sea foam green lover and this color is very popular for spring/super 2013.

Soft Peach

This kitchen is stunning the spacious flow is very eye catching.  White cabinetry and island eating area is great contrast to the dark countertops.  The flooring is Jerusalem Halila Gold Limestone.  It is a beautiful color that is also within that ‘peach’ family.  Soft peach was added as paint color to the exposed walls in this space. The crown moulding and up lighting make the peach color pop and helps create a fresh look!

Tangerine Orange

These Kitchen cabinets are custom made with stainless steel doors and cherry wood frames that really pop.  Grey black granite counters and porcelain floors.  Backsplash is covered with large grey glass tile.  The orange tones from the cherry wood are picked up by the accent cut out chairs in the eating area.  The orange color is carried out throughout the space creating a cohesive design.

June Colour Palette

Neon Pink

The color pink represents compassion, nurturing and love. It relates to unconditional love and understanding, and the giving and receiving of nurturing.  Pink is a very feminine colour and can add a sense of femininity to any space.

3-10-inspiring-ideas-colourful-living-rooms-Cosy-pink

What do you think of how pink is used in this space? The thing with neon that has become apparent, is that one either loves it or hates it. I for one love neon colors and find it pretty uplifting. Neon’s are full of exuberance and intensity, which is what most lovers of neon pink find appealing.

Aqua Blue/ Turquois

Dining rooms were once thought of and used only for formal gatherings. Thankfully, this trend has changed. No longer is the dining space reserved only for the best silverware and china when guests visit, but now it’s a room to be used often and on an everyday basis. This change has eased the rules of decorating the dining room.  Choose a predominant piece of furniture in a shocking color to really up the ante of your dining room. This aqua blue sideboard definitely reinstates this space back into the world of today.
For a longer-lasting addition to the kitchen, consider swapping out your window coverings for fabric shades in a fun lemon-yellow print.  This can be easily changed for any season with different fabrics, textures, tints and tones.  Pairing this light yellow with the high gloss modern kitchen is very complimentary, and adds just the amount of contrast.

Color Palette- Month of May

MayColorPalette2_thumb3

It’s May!  A month full of reasons to celebrate.  Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, Victoria Day Weekend.  The sunshine has started to show itself and warm us up, really brightening up everyone’s day!  Road construction crews and spring clean up are in full effect.  This colour palette mixes aged tones, rustic wood, and bold shades of rust to create a chic, eclectic look!

This Kitchen really captured my attention when I was searching online for the month of May inspiration.  The red stained cabinets look great with the rustic originality of the wooden exposed beams and stairs. Red stained cabinets make a bold statement and work best in a kitchen with minimal adornment, especially if the space doesn’t get a whole lot of natural light.
Black appliances look sharp alongside medium to dark gray cabinets. This kitchen palette of black, white and shades of gray is understated yet so sophisticated. A touch of warmth is essential, however, to avoid a cold and sterile-looking kitchen. The rich wood floor adds the perfect dose of warmth and character.
Yellow looks modern in this contemporary stunner. The bold yellow cabinetry is balanced nicely by the light wood floor and darker wood-clad exposed ceiling. The stainless steel appliances add a cool sheen to the mix.  Really loving the track lighting in this kitchen as well.
