Decorate with Wallpaper

wallpaper1One of the biggest problem areas in a room is a large blank wall that stares back at you as you enter. These walls create a feeling of emptiness within a room, and sometimes act to disrupt the flow of color and design that’s already in place: or they do not fulfill their potential of creating visual impact in a room.

Wallpaper is an inexpensive and popular way to decorate walls and bring them to life. Depending on the size of the wall, its coverage, and what image it wants to portray, wallpapers lend versatility to a room and allow for your creativity.

Working with wallpaper is easy when you know how to do it, and here some tips.

Preparing a Room for Wallpapering

Wallpaper disasters occur because proper preparation of the wall is not taken seriously. Like when painting a wall or upholstering a couch, a significant amount of time must be dedicated to the preparation of a wall. This extra time spent will save you time and trouble in the long-run.

Measure your wall and purchase wallpaper that will cover the entire surface of the wall (allowing for error and pattern matching). Cut your wallpaper into manageable sized strips when you are ready to use them.

To prepare the wall for wallpapering, remove any switch plates, wall fixtures, and socket covers. Clean the wall thoroughly to remove any dirt and/or mildew, and let it dry completely. Search the wall surface for any holes, depressions, or bumps: these may be repaired using a drywall compound or spackling compound. Apply the compound, smooth it as much as possible, and let it dry thoroughly. Sanding is then required to smooth the surface to make it as easy as possible for the wallpaper to adhere to the wall. Then prime your wall with an acrylic adhesive which is recommended by a wallpaper expert.

The Act of Wallpapering

Once you’ve primed your wall with the adhesive, decide how you want to hang the wallpaper. Go in the direction (right to left or vise versa) that is easiest for you. Cut your wallpaper strips allowing for pattern matching and a small amount of waste at the bottom. Starting from top, apply the wallpaper to the wall.  You may want to precut the holes for the switches, other openings, etc. (being very exact with the measurements to avoid error) or cut them as you proceed to hang the wallpaper (the easiest way).  Either way you must be precise!
Amateurs often end up with the problem of small air bubbles under the wallpaper, or uneven attachment to the wall. Resist the temptation to use a plastic smoother as it may tear the wallpaper or leave marks if used with improper pressure. Instead, use clean soft cloth and apply gentle pressure with the hand, or a light flexible rubber flap – much like the one used to clean windows.

Designing with that Wallpaper

Wallpaper provides an opportunity for colors and patterns to be incorporated into a design. The appearance of a large wall may benefit from wallpaper with patterns or stripes to break their overwhelming size. Use vertical stripes to add height to the room, and horizontal ones to create the illusion of a wider space. Another option is to incorporate a dual design – using a striped pattern on the upper half of the wall and a solid or floral print on the lower portion to create interest.

Use borders near the ceiling to create visual interest and give the illusion of height to the room, as it calls attention to the ceiling.

When using wallpaper in more than one room of the house, you have the option of creating fluidity between two rooms without having to use the same wallpaper. The fluidity may be achieved by staying different tones of the same colors, contrasting colors, or similar patterns.

Building the Room from the Wallpaper

When designing an entire room, wallpaper create a nice visual palette with which to work. Wallpapers, because they provide various color and pattern in their designs, may create a central mood in the room (formal, informal, etc.); the source of a color scheme (from the colors in the wallpaper); and even a pattern that will flow throughout the room (floral patterns, stripes, or dots).

Wallpaper provides a great opportunity for design ingenuity. Don’t be afraid to use the wall to its full potential – either to enhance the design of the room or build an entire room around it.

Our Top 5 Designer Pet Peeves

Our Design Centre experts know how to size up a room at first sight.  Not only can they visualize what the bones of the home will look like in the end result.  They can also fully furnish spaces and envision exactly what the room will look like with furniture.  We thought we would share these common mistakes that happen every day when it comes to interior decorating/design.  These are the little things that we notice immediately!

Poorly positioned art– This has to be my number one pet peeve! I cant stand seeing art poisoned to high.  it should be eye level and not all the way up the wall. To be safe the best height to hang your art would be 57″ front the floor.  If it’s over a sofa or bed remember to hang it about an arms width above the back of the sofa.wrong art
Floating Rug- This is when your rug is too small for the space.  Make sure when rug shopping that you find one that extends to under each piece of furniture in the seating area. This brings the seating area into one and will give you that complete look.  You don’t want it floating on its own in the center.

Matching Everything– Matching furniture sets whether it be for the bedroom, living or dining room.  Rooms that have been purchased from a single source always give the feeling that its missing something and lacking in character.  We encourage you to take your time when furniture shopping.  Pick pieces that compliment one another, similar to how you would choose your wardrobe pieces.

Skimpy Curtains- What is worse than having no curtains?  Curtains that are too short for the window itself.  It is very important that you measure correctly and let curtains touch the floor.  Also another tip, hanging your curtain rod as high as possible under crown molding for example, will help you achieve the look of a taller ceiling.drapes shortVS high and long

Clutter or Bare Spaces-  Make sure you have enough in the space but not too much.  I prefer to use large pieces when it comes to styling accessories instead of having multiple smaller nick knacks everywhere.  You want to make sure that everything is balanced, it definitely will make the room look more put together. Before VSafter

Benjamin Moore Color of the Year!

Color Of the Year- 2017

Benjamin Moore has released their color of the year and we couldn’t be more thrilled.  Color of the Year, Shadow 2117-30.  We are loving the undertones of deep purples in this tone.  Some color pairings that would look great with Shadow would be different shades of purple, greens and ivory’s.

2117-30

Usually when picking out paint colors there is some sort of inspiration behind it.  This can come from anything from the outdoors, floral’s and even the latest fashion trends.

Here are some examples of the color inspiration pulled from floral’s and how it can be used in a space and the end result.

We also area loving their entire 2017 color palette.  These are our Top four Benjamin Moore 2017 Colors

2062-20 HC-160 AF-3002114-40

First on our top 4 would be Gentleman’s Gray 2062-20.  This color is extremely on trend right now.   The deep blackened blue is a very masculine tint reminding us of a well tailored suit.  This color would look fantastic with metallic accessories, lighter blue’s, silvers and golden tans.  This color is seen over and over in cabinetry and built in units.  Bye Bye White Hello Deep Navy’s!

Here are some inspiration photos using Gentleman’s Gray.

Second on our list would be Knoxville Gray HC-160.  Another dark and moody color in blue family.  This color would look fantastic on an exterior all siding home it would instantly update the look.  Or why not paint interior doors?  Change your hardware to the popular bronze or matte gold, this would become a conversation starter for sure!  Another look i love is using this moody color in a powder room, accenting with bohemian reds, porcelains and golds.

Third on the list Dinner Party AF-300.  Although i do think that this next color is extremely bold to be used as a main all over wall color. It is very sophisticated with deep red and black undertones.  I would absolutely use this color in small doses. Wether it be used on the front door of a home, or used in a DIY project re finishing an old piece of furniture.  Another dramatic touch would be to paint the backs of a bookshelf for that daring focal point in a room.

Last but not the least Benjamin Moore’s Wet Concrete 2114-40.  A Classic and elegant choice! This color can be used anywhere in a home.  Looking especially elegant in and en-suite master bath. Or customized into a wall paper look with horizontal stripe panels.  A bold move would be to paint out an entire room including ceilings and baseboards.  You can easily bright up the space with light art work, furnishings and accessories.

lot 149 homeowners

Mr. and Mrs. Jabbaribar moved here four years ago from Iran.  Mr. Jabbaribar works as a technician and Mrs. Jabbaribar as a hairstylist.  They have one young boy who is just starting school, they were both very excited to be buying their first home together.

When asked why they chose Sunlight Heritage Homes, Mrs. Jabbaribar responded that they searched online and Sunlight was one of the top builders that appeared.  When they went to visit the model home they fell in love and decided to purchase ‘The Preston’ model.  They also really loved the unique exterior and modern feel the home had.

For finishes they kept everything neutral with dark woods with grey undertones.  This couple brought along with them photos for inspiration.  Being very visual, this helped them envision what their kitchen would look like with a two tone design.  Light Kitchen and Dark Island.   A cohesive color scheme beginning with the exterior of the home and brought throughout.  Lot 149 Kitchen Counter

Fall is here…

shutterstock_153297020Oh fall, one of my most favorite times of the year.  With fall comes the vibrant reds, oranges and yellow tones.  Cool temperatures and pumpkins galore. It also means that winter isn’t too far away so here are a few tips to prep your homes for the fall and upcoming colder season.

Lawn Care

Did you know that grass roots keep growing until the ground gets down to 40 degrees.  So this means it is a great time to feed that grass of yours.  Apply a high phosphorus mix in the fall so that you will have bright green grass in the spring.

Exterior Faucets

You would be surprised as to how many people aren’t aware that water pipes can burst with the drop of temperature.  A pipe that bursts can be both expensive and time consuming to fix.  The pipe that is most likely for this to happen to would be your exterior hose bib. All you have to do is make sure that you turn off the valves. All Faucets that exit your home should have a shut off valve.  Once its turned off be sure to drain out any water that may be sitting in the faucet.

Weather Striping

Make sure to check and replace your weather striping.  Simply do a visual check around your windows and doors It usually needs to be changed every few years.

Furnace

Now that summer is over you will most likely be spending more time indoors.  Breathing that air that is being pushed around your home. Be sure to replace or clean your furnace filter. Not only will it help the quality of air but will keep the furnace running in tip top shape.

Some other important tips to keep up with…

  • Clean and inspect your dryer vent
  • Check that carbon monoxide detectors are working properly
  • Change the batteries in your smoke detectors

Get the home of your dream. Minimalist style

MLS London Ontario

Interior designing is not everyone’s cup of tea, especially those who want the best for their dream homes. Even if the house has been built in the best, spectacular way, right down to the last detail, wrong choices on the buyer’s part can ruin things and botch up the end result.

If you don’t want to make any mistakes, here are a few tips that will save you the trouble of spending your money on the wrong accessories.

  1. Light colors: If your house has not been painted yet, then here’s an advice: go light. Light colors are known for giving any room, big or small, the illusion of largeness. Irrespective of the size of the house, if you are having guests home, then this will definitely help you entertain them with ease.
  2. Kitchen lamp: If you know someone in your family who shirks household shores, then this tip is just for you. Get a lamp for the kitchen counter to give the place a more intimate feel. This will keep the person in question from running off. Try an antique lamp for a better effect.
  3. Dining area-cum-gallery: The living room is the first room that comes into focus when you or your guests enter the house. Create your own dining-area in one part of the room, and put up a painting on the wall next to the area for making the area look inviting for the guests.

These details will help you keep it minimalistic and stylish both at the same time, especially if you are short on cash. With the right materials, you don’t have to worry about money…or your home looking like something that’s popped out of your (or anyone’s) worst nightmares!
